TRAVEL TIPS

TOURING THE CITY: BUENOS AIRES IS A LARGE, MODERN CITY WITH LOTS OF PUBLIC TRANSPORTATION OPTIONS, BUT THE BEST WAY TO TOUR THE SIGHTS IS ON FOOT OR BICYCLE.

  • TAXIS
Buenos Aires taxis are everywhere, it is easy to recognize by their black and yellow paint. We always recommend calling a cab from the hotel back to the hotel but must stop one on the street, so always make sure that it is a radio taxi. All taxis are metered, and can request a ticket. The rate of net charges every two blocks when in motion, and if it does not move comes every two minutes. Drivers do not expect a tip, but generally are allowed to keep small change. Empty taxis have a red light that says "FREE" lit in the top right corner of the windshield.

  • SUBWAY
The Buenos Aires subway is the fastest way to get around the city. Keep in mind that it gets very hot and is crowded during peak hours. It has 6 lines identified with letters and colors: A, B, C, D, E and H.

To travel is necessary to buy magnetic cards called "subway-pass" that are available in those located down stairs ticket offices. the "RISING" card that also serves for collective and trains can also be used. No coins needed to buy them, but we recommend always have small change. If you think traveling by subway more than once to save time and hassle you can buy several passes, because they tend to form very long queues to buy them.

To enter the subway, put the subway-pass or card into the slot RISING reel, and then pass out. Platforms at some stations are on opposite sides, so you have to look good in what direction to go before entering. You can make all the combinations you want to buy a single trip, which will remain in force as long as they do not leave the subway network.

Trains run from 5:00 am until 10.30pm from Monday to Saturday and from 8:00 am to 10:00 pm on Sundays and holidays. Service frequency is faster on weekdays; weekends have to wait longer as the frequency decreases.

  • TRAIN
Buenos Aires trains connect the city center with the neighborhoods and districts of the province. They are used mainly by locals and are not as useful for tourists, unless you want to visit Tigre or San Isidro in Northern area.

Buenos Aires has a bus system or better known as "colectivo" which is huge and impossible to learn all routes. You can get a guide called "T Guide" at any newsstand, or see full itineraries online on sites like www.comoviajo.com or www.xcolectivo.com.ar.

Most of the lines, but not all, operate 24 hours. The bus stops are each approximately 200 meters. They have a black or blue sign indicating the number of collective, but be surprised if the number is stuck on a lamppost or tree, or if you just do not are none!

The coins are prized as gold! Local groups do not accept bills, there is a vending machine tickets on board will change, or prepaid card is used RISING. Most trips cost AR $ 3, the driver "three pesos please" is requested and then the coins are placed on the machine. It is useful to inform the driver the streets where one goes, only to confirm that it is taking the right group.

Make sure you know where you are going and have a map to locate because stops are not advertised. To request the stop must approach the door and ring the bell. It is also important to know that can not be combined buses as is done with the metro, so you have to pay a new ticket for each trip.

  • BUS
To go by bus to anywhere in the country, go to the Retiro bus terminal. It is very long, almost 400 meters, three stories high and has 75 stops for buses.

You can buy tickets to any destination of Argentina practically. No need to make an advance purchase, except during the summer or high season and winter (January, February and July). Keep in mind that you can not make reservations, you can only buy a ticket, and usually are not refundable. Retiro station, you have to stay alert and take good care belongings!

  • SHIP
There is a ferry service to and from Cologne in Montevideo (Uruguay). Most of them leave from the Buquebus terminal, near Puerto Madero.

Suipacha 1359 (C1011ACC) between Juncal and Arroyo, Ciudad de Buenos Aires, Argentina.
